Chicago Story On-Stage At The Goodman

Chicago’s soul takes the spotlight with Emmy-nominated actress Jenna Fischer (from The Office) starring in “Ashland Avenue” at the Goodman Theatre through October 12.

The play, written and directed by Fischer’s husband Lee Kirk, tells the story of Sam, a daughter torn between inheriting her father’s fading TV and Video shop and chasing her dream of becoming an author.

Francis Guinan plays the father, a local legend ready to pass the torch.

Kirk, a DePaul grad, says the inspiration came from his Chicago days. From the neighborhoods, riding the CTA, and the sense of community. “Chicago has a soul like no other city I’ve been to,” he said.

Though Fischer is a St. Louis native, she sees herself in Sam’s struggle of leaving home to follow big dreams.

“Ashland Avenue” is a love letter to Chicago.

Catch it at the Goodman Theatre, 170 N. Dearborn St., through Oct. 12.
