Universal Studios Brings Year-Round Horror Attraction to Chicago
Universal Studios is bringing its immersive horror experience to the Midwest for the first time.
Right across from the future Bally's casino, Chicago will soon welcome Universal Horror Unleashed. This attraction will transform 700 W. Chicago Ave. into "a world-class horror attraction and entertainment destination," according to city officials.
The news release said that guests can expect "terrifying mazes, unforgettable scares, themed bars and unique food and beverage offerings, and a retail space featuring exclusive merchandise."
While this will be the first location in the Midwest, another is set to open in Las Vegas this August. This venue draws inspiration from classic horror films like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Exorcist. Universal will also feature its iconic monsters, including Frankenstein's monster, Count Dracula, and more.
The Chicago location is expected to follow a similar model and theme.
The attraction will operate year-round, delivering "fear all year." Universal executives have called Chicago the perfect match for the horror genre.
The project began in October 2024 and is expected to create more than 400 permanent jobs and generate over $1 billion in economic impact.
Mayor Brandon Johnson commented on the new attraction:
"This project and redevelopment will also uplift and revitalize the dynamic neighborhood... when completed. I'm very excited about this announcement, and I have no doubt that fans of this genre will flock to our city for these memorable experiences."
Construction is slated to begin in early 2026 once permits are secured and the design plans are finalized.
"Universal's decision to make such a significant investment in Illinois is a testament to the state's unmatched entertainment sector, renowned workforce, and strong infrastructure," Gov. JB Pritzker said in a news release. "Universal choosing Illinois didn't happen by accident - we were proud to support this project through our EDGE incentive program, which has helped fortify a positive business climate that draws world-class companies to the state."
