Chicago Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya’s comeback lasted just one game before taking a brutal turn.
In the 8th inning against the Blue Jays on Wednesday, Amaya sprinted toward first base and lunged for the bag but his foot hit the corner awkwardly, sending him crashing to the turf at Rogers Centre. Trainers rushed in, and moments later, a cart was brought out as Amaya, visibly emotional, was taken off the field.
Manager Craig Counsell later confirmed the injury: a left ankle sprain that had already swollen “pretty good.” Amaya was immediately placed on the injured list.
The timing couldn’t be worse, this was Amaya’s first start after nearly three months sidelined with a strained oblique.
“Bad luck unfortunately, and we’re going to miss him,” Counsell told Marquee Sports Network.
For Cubs fans, it’s another gut-punch in a season already riddled with injuries and a hard moment for a player who’s been fighting just to get back on the field.
