Division II Dreams Come True

Chicago Bears quarterback Tyson Bagent couldn’t hold back his emotions on Wednesday as he signed the kind of contract that changes everything. The 25-year-old backup, once an undrafted Division II free agent out of Shepherd University, just secured a two-year extension worth up to $16 million with incentives.

For Bagent, this wasn’t just about football. Fighting through tears, he explained how the deal impacts his family. “My dad is my right-hand man. He didn’t have running water until high school,” Bagent said. “Now I can help people who’ve helped me. This is a weight off my shoulders and my family’s shoulders.”

Bagent earned the deal through grit and consistency. After beating the odds in 2023 to land the Bears’ backup role behind Justin Fields, he impressed again this preseason, leading three straight scoring drives in a 38-0 rout of the Buffalo Bills. He finished 13-of-22 for 196 yards and a touchdown.

The Bears may have rookie Caleb Williams as the future, but Bagent’s story shows the power of persistence. For now, he’s focused on staying ready and grateful his hard work has finally paid off.
